April in Maine, you are such a tease

In other parts of the country, gardeners are tilling up beds and planting seeds. In Maine, only the truly brave or foolish mess with the garden this early in the season.

It's all a big tease, really. Days get warm. There's lots of sun. Small green things start to poke up through the ground. Then, in a heartbeat, two feet of snow can fall and winter returns, if only for another few days.

Today is another grey and drizzly day in Gorham. In the garden, there are only a few patches of snow left. I've been toying with the idea of putting down some black plastic to help warm beds so I can get the winter rye turned in. Then I looked at the forecast for tomorrow.

One to three inches of the white stuff is scheduled to fall and while spring snow rarely sticks around for long it is still a blow to morale. So it's back inside for me to spritz the seedlings, finish my last minute strategy for planting and wait for spring to show up for real.
